The book offered to the reader is a kind of anthology, which contains the most important documents and materials previously introduced into scientific circulation, reflecting the main stages and key events of the pre-war political crisis of the second half of the 1930s, the measures of the Soviet state to strengthen the defense capability of the USSR and strengthen it. geostrategic positions on the eve of the German attack, the course of hostilities on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. For the first time, a number of documents from the funds of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation are published, the content of which makes it possible to supplement the idea of the degree of readiness of the USSR for war in the summer of 1941, to clarify a number of details of the dramatic picture of the Border Battle. The documents of the first part of the work reflect the main events that led to World War II, characterize Germany's preparations for an attack and waging a war of annihilation against the USSR, and reveal the efforts of the Soviet state and military leadership to repel aggression.

This publication was prepared by leading military historians on the basis of the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus as part of the international project "Country on Fire", designed to comprehensively and objectively study the main pages of the history of the struggle of the Soviet people against the invaders in 1941-1945. It is a continuation of the two-volume edition “1941. The Country on Fire”, published in 2011. The book is devoted to issues of military strategy, domestic policy (national economy, public life, restoration of war-torn regions of the country), the liberation mission of the Red Army in Europe, and the interaction of the USSR with allies in the Anti-Hitler coalition, the interaction of partisans and underground fighters with the Red Army, the restoration of economic and social life, the fight against the nationalist underground.

This publication was prepared by leading military historians on the basis of the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus as part of the international project "Country on Fire", designed to comprehensively and objectively study the main pages of the history of the struggle of the Soviet people against the invaders in 1941-1945. It is a continuation of the two-volume edition "1941. The Country on Fire", published in 2011.
