Summary
The Joint Institute of Power and Nuclear Research - Sosny offers customers services for the study of neutron breeding systems at the "Hyacinth" critical stand under an outsourcing agreement or a subcontracting.
Description
The "Hyacinth" critical stand provides an experimental base for solving a wide range of problems in the development of nuclear energy technologies, both fundamental and applied, such as:
- fundamental research in the physics of nuclear reactors and radiation protection, the criticality of fissile materials and nuclear safety;
- applied research to ensure the development of a new generation of nuclear reactors for power plants and nuclear power plants for various purposes;
- research to ensure the development of hardware and software tools for monitoring and diagnosing equipment of reactor plants based on the analysis of process noise;
- testing of products of radio electronic equipment for resistance to the effects of gamma and neutron radiation;
providing an educational and methodological experimental base for training specialists in the field of nuclear energy and the use of ionizing radiation;
- development of mutually beneficial scientific and technical cooperation with nuclear centers of foreign countries.

The critical stand includes:
- a critical assembly that can be used to study the physical characteristics of the cores of nuclear reactors with a liquid moderator (water, etc.), a solid moderator (zirconium hydride, etc.) and without a moderator;
control and protection system;
- hydraulic system for operation with liquid moderator;
- a system for collecting, processing and storing experimental data;
- system of radiation and dosimetric control;
- communication and television surveillance system;
- system of physical protection;
- a number of other engineering systems necessary to ensure its operation.
Advantages and Innovations
The critical stand was created using modern technological equipment and the latest measuring equipment, most of which were developed specifically for this stand.

When conducting experimental studies on critical assemblies, a system for collecting, processing and storing experimental data is used, consisting of personal computers connected to a local network, CAMAC and SCXI signal preprocessing and data acquisition subsystems, and experimental setups. The specified system of hardware and software is used to measure the neutron-physical characteristics of critical assemblies: reactivity, reactivity margin, efficiency of control devices, rates of nuclear reactions, distributions of energy release in the core, lifetime of prompt neutrons, effective fraction of delayed neutrons, absolute power.

In the near future, it is planned to conduct benchmark experiments on the criticality of neutron breeding systems based on uranium of various degrees of enrichment with a water and zirconium hydride moderator and without a moderator, to perform experiments on the physics and safety of innovative nuclear reactors for various purposes (including with an active zone based on ball fuel rods of small diameter) and others.
