Artificial Intelligence Index Report 2024
April 2025 marks the one-year anniversary of the publication of the Artificial Intelligence Index Report 2024, prepared by Stanford University. It is the most comprehensive and in-depth report on artificial intelligence (AI) to date.
Key takeaways from the 502-page report:
● The United States continues to top the AI Index Report 2024, the United States has extended its lead over China, which remains in second place. The two superpowers are significantly ahead of all other countries in the index.
● Singapore maintains third place, confirming its position as Asia’s most dynamic AI hub after China. It scores highly in most relative metrics (such as AI scientists per million people). However, the country also made significant strides in absolute metrics, particularly in AI research and investment.
● The United Kingdom struggles to hold on to fourth place, with France catching up. The country has moved up to fifth place, entering the top five for AI development for the first time. While the UK is strong in commercial AI, France is now ahead in open-source AI development and other key areas, including government spending and computing power.
● South Korea remains sixth in the index, and is particularly strong in the application of AI in key industrial sectors. The top 10 also includes Israel, the third-most popular country for private investment in AI, and Canada, which has the third-largest public AI strategy.
● India enters the top 10 for the first time, with a particularly strong and diverse AI workforce, driven by demographics and academic excellence. However, much of India’s AI talent is going overseas, and India’s success in AI has not yet translated into high levels of private investment and computing power.
● Governments around the world are stepping up their AI funding, especially Saudi Arabia, whose public spending commitments on AI significantly exceed those of the US and China.
● Overall, private investment in AI has remained relatively stable, but funding for generative AI has increased. The global generative AI market is heavily influenced by the United States, particularly several large tech companies.
