Summary
The Scientific and Practical Centre for Bioresources offers consumers services for the development of strategic schemes for the conservation and rational use of peatlands in Belarus, schemes for distributing peatlands by areas of use, as well as technologies for the restoration and environmental rehabilitation of disturbed natural areas on the basis of an outsourcing agreement and is looking for partners to conclude a distribution services agreement.
Description
The current state of protection and use of peatlands in Belarus, the main problems and threats were assessed, principles and directions of activities to ensure the sustainable use of peatlands were developed. With the use of remote sensing methods and field surveys, an inventory of the current state of peatlands was carried out with an assessment of their ecological and economic significance. Based on the application of the principles and criteria regulated by the Strategy and the special regulatory document TCP 17.12-08-2015 “Environmental Protection and Nature Management of the Territory. Determination of directions for the use of peat deposits and swamps”, all peatlands of Belarus were divided into the following types of use:
- fund of swamps subject to special and special protection;
- fund under development (for peat extraction);
- Fund of especially valuable types of peat, land fund (mainly for agriculture and forestry).
The scheme of distribution of peatlands is the result of the redistribution of peatlands, taking into account their current state, comments of specialists from the district and regional executive committees, interested ministries and departments.
The technology of restoration and ecological rehabilitation of disturbed peatlands - various methods and methodological recommendations have been developed and tested to prevent violations of the hydrological regime of adjacent bogs during peat extraction and ecological rehabilitation of disturbed bogs; a methodology for monitoring waterlogging processes (biodiversity, hydrology, greenhouse gas fluxes) has been developed and tested.
The development was supported by the United Nations Development Program, in accordance with the requirements of a number of international environmental conventions.

Advantages and Innovations
The economic effect of the development is not less than 5 million US dollars, only as a result of the prevention of peat fires.
It contributes to the conservation and maintenance of clean freshwater reserves, maintaining a positive carbon balance, stability of the hydrological regime of rivers, mitigation of climatic anomalies, and the preservation of globally significant biodiversity. In total, according to the developed technology, over 51 thousand hectares of disturbed peatlands have been restored in Belarus.
