Description
The separation of a hydrogen-containing mixture using continuous metal membranes is an efficient process that allows one to obtain both impurity gases and high-purity hydrogen.

A.V.Luikov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute of the NAS of Belarus developed flat and tubular (including capillary, 4 mm in diameter) configurations of membranes. Worked out methods for creating palladium-nickel, nickel membranes with a thickness of 80 microns.

To achieve maximum hydrogen permeability, the Institute fabricated binary nickel membranes with a total thickness of 90 µm, consisting of thin (10–15 µm) nonporous selective and porous structural layers of nickel.

In the developed nickel membranes, the activation energy is lower than in palladium-nickel membranes, as a result of which the rate of penetration of hydrogen into them is higher. At the same time, the production of nickel membranes is more economical, and capillary membranes have proven themselves well at high temperatures and pressures (up to 10 atm).

The Institute has created a gas separation installation, designed to study the processes of selection and concentration of components of hydrogen-containing gas mixtures. The installation uses several modules, prefabricated parallel or serial, while it can be implemented accumulative or flow mode. The productivity of the plant is 30–90 l/(m2∙h) depending on the selected mode.

The staff of the Laboratory of Physical and Chemical Hydrodynamics developed the "Membrane Gas Separation 1.0" (MGS v. 1.00) program, which allows simulating gas separation processes for various initial conditions, comparing theoretical calculations and experimental data, and making changes to the operation of the installation to achieve maximum efficiency in the process of separating hydrogen-containing gas mixtures.

Applications: chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and food industries, biotechnology.

The Institute offers interested partners:
